Salvatore Capezio was born in 1871 in Muro Lucano, Italy but decided to become a cobbler instead of following his father's path as a construction engineer. In 1887, at 17 years old, he opened his shop on Broadway and 39th Street in New York City, across from the old Metropolitan Opera House.
